Ajou University Professor Hyung Tak Seo (Department of Energy System Research and Department of Materials Science and Engineering, pictured above) developed a highly efficient and stable photocatalytic electrode. The research findings were published as the inside cover in the January 28th issue of The Journal of Materials Chemistry A. Releasing only water after being used, hydrogen is a clean next-generation source of energy and is increasingly being utilized across industries. While hydrogen is mostly produced by reforming fossil fuels, studies on photoelectrochemical water splitting technologies are being actively conducted to replace the fossil fuel method. A key to this technology is to produce water splitting photoelectrodes by utilizing charges generated from sunlight. The problem, however, is the fact that stability and efficiency are hard to achieve at the same time because high optical conversion efficiency leads to early corrosion and high stability lowers optical conversion efficiency. The latest photocatalytic electrode developed by Professor Seo and his team has a tandem structure in which three different nanostructures and membranes are built and a single electrode directly responds to sunlight. This is completely different from the previous approaches that separate solar cells from catalytic electrodes or use multiple photoelectrode plates. The new photoelectrode consists of a photosorption oxide nano plate that creates electron holes (positive charges) and electrons (negative charges), an oxide nano particle that promotes the separation of charges to encourage their movement to opposite electrodes, and a protective membrane that prevents photocorrosion and allows high-energy electron holes to pass through the surface. The photoelectrodes helped sunlight-generated electrons to be divided into anodes and cathodes without any damage, efficiently generating hydrogen from water. The photoelectric current, a standard of water photoelectrolysis efficiency, was found to be world-class for single tandem-structure electrodes in the latest development. In addition, hydrogen generation efficiency was confirmed to remain stable at 95 percent for 24 hours in a photocurrent measurement and a gas chromatographic analysis. Professor Seo also developed a process that fully covers an ultrathin (five-nanometer) TiO2 protective membrane without any space by using electrodeposition technology. Compared to the process without any protective membrane, photoefficiency and optical conversion efficiency improved more than 25 and 16 percent, respectively. Professor Seo said, "It is very rare to develop a tandem photocatalytic electrode that has both high optical conversion efficiency and stable photo-reaction," adding, "If you use a promoter to enhance catalyst reactions, hydrogen can be generated even more efficiently through water splitting, which can be applied to photochemical reactions of other materials such as methanolysis." Ajou University was selected as an institution for pilot drone projects (researcher-in-charge: Professor Jung Yol Jo) by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.Last year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport initiated pilot drone projects to foster the drone industry. Drones are increasingly being used for commercial purposes in South Korea, with 1,000 companies utilizing drones and over 2,000 drones currently registered. In 2017, pilot drone projects will be carried out by 25 institutions in seven exclusive areas across the country, and the Ministry selected 10 institutions and three areas for the purpose in December 29th in addition to the existing ones.Since last year, the Ministry has been verifying the suitability of drones for various purposes and conducting performance tests through about 740 hours of test flights, including flight safety, automated flight, and take-off and landing accuracy. Flights beyond visual range (one kilometer or farther away) have also been underway since October.In addition, studies to explore new models of drone usage in different actual environments will be conducted, including their usage in coastal areas, missions involving multiple drones simultaneously, and flights at night.Ajou University is participating in the Commodity Transport Category in which drones are used to transport cargo and deliver relief and medical supplies to disaster-stricken and remote areas.

Two foreign students from Ajou University Graduate School received the '2016 Academic Achievement Award for Foreign Students on the Government of the Republic of Korea Scholarship' presented by the National Institute for International Education (NIIE) under the Ministry of Education. The award ceremony was held on the afternoon of December 22nd at NIIE located in Bundang, Gyeonggi-do.NIIE gives the annual Awards to selected foreign students who are on the Korean Government scholarship. Winners of the First Award and the Excellence Award are chosen from among those in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses upon recommendation from 66 universities throughout the country.The two award-winners from Ajou are Mahesh Chandra Patra from India (doctoral course, Department of Molecular Science and Technology of the Graduate School) and Yout Pagna (master's course, Department of International Business of the Graduate School of International Studies) from Cambodia.They received the Awards for their outstanding grades and research activities, of which the findings were published in various academic journals and presented at symposiums, etc.Johnson Jervian Jerdian (master's course, Department of Environmental Engineering of the Graduate School) from Jamaica, another student from the University, won the Excellence Award in the category of Foreign Student Essays on Korea.

Ajou University Psychological Science Center (PSC), Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Canada, and South Korea’s Department of Justice (DOJ) entered into an agreement on developing psychological treatment tools. At the agreement signing ceremony held on December 16th at the DOJ in Gwacheon, Dean Seung Ik Yoo of Ajou’s College of Social Sciences and Director Jae Heung Yoon from the DOJ Department Security Policy signed and exchanged the agreement. It covers the joint development of tools for evaluating psychological treatment efficiency, extensive cooperation in academic and technological exchanges, the promotion and establishment of infrastructure for the evaluation tools, and the utilization of research materials through mutual cooperation. The three institutions plan to collaborate for academic and technological exchanges, including the joint development of treatment efficiency evaluation tools that are suitable for the South Korean context. In doing so, they will share human resources in carrying out the project. Ajou's PSC is currently headed by Professor Kyung il Kim (Department of Psychology). It is conducting extensive research activities relating to sexual assault, violence, and psychopaths, including the establishment of a psychological autopsy system with the support of the Department of Health and Welfare, the development of reasonable criteria for evaluating the likelihood of criminals recommitting sexual assaults with the support of the National Forensic Service, and the establishment of convergence models for preventing people from killing and injuring themselves with the support of the National Research Council for Economics and Humanities under Prime Minister's Office. In July, the University invited Professor Stephen D. Hart (Department of Psychology, SFU), a world-renowned expert in legal psychology specializing in the evaluation of the danger of sexual assault and psychopaths, to hold a certification workshop for the DOJ's corrections officials in charge of psychological treatment and graduate students. PSC is scheduled to arrange regular programs with invited legal psychology experts for relevant specialists and students.

On December 8th, the Department of Software under Ajou University’s College of Information Technology held the 'Ajou Greative Software Festival 2016,' in which students in the Department taking classes in their majors displayed their projects and discussed them with others.The event, which was held in the lobby and spaces on the second- through fourth-floors in Paldal Hall, displayed about 85 projects by 211 students taking Software Capstone Design, IT Intensive Course, Self-led Project, Self-led Research, System Programming, and Software Engineering classes and by those participating in Paran Semester – Ajou Creative Activity Program.Students from local elementary, middle, and high schools also participated in the Festival, observing the exhibition and evaluating the projects.The Department of Software (Director Ki Yeol Ryu) is receiving 6.5 billion won in research funds after being selected as a ‘Software Specialized University' in 2015 by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning and is actively providing software education to students from other departments and local citizens, etc., as well as the students in the Department.

The seven-story College of Nursing building will be constructed on the space between Jonghap Hall and Songjae Hall. The ceremony was attended by Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim, Permanent Director Yeong Hyeon Lee from the Daewoo Educational Foundation, President Hee Sug Ryu of Ajou University Medical Center, and CEO Pil Seung Lee of Poonglim, etc.The new building is scheduled to be completed in May 2018 with a space of 9,235㎡, which will cost 14.1 billion won and include advanced nursing practice rooms, simulation rooms, seminar rooms, classrooms, and laboratories, etc.Ajou's College of Nursing was launched in 1998 with 120 students and 2,215 students have finished the regular and special courses since then. It performed well in the 2014 Colleges of Nursing Evaluation and all of its students have passed the relevant national test in all but one year.President Kim said, "Our College of Nursing has made remarkable progress through its determination and passion despite its relatively short history. On December 13th, Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim met with students with disabilities in the Community Lounge of the University Library.The event was attended by eight students, two parents, President Kim, Vice President for Student Affairs Jai Hyoung Cho, and Jeong Sun Lee, a staff member from the Center for Students with Disabilities.During the meeting, the student participants discussed the inconveniences and difficulties they have experienced in their campus life with the officials from the University. Among other things, they requested that the facilities, including dormitories and the library, be improved to better accommodate disabled students.President Kim listened to their opinions and said that he would quickly and actively have dormitory facilities improved and provide students with disabilities better support for attending classes, etc. He went on to say, "A disabled student has been to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China with the help of a friend after being selected for the After You Program this summer," adding, "I ask that you take on challenges and seek extensive experience like the student."He also recommended that they look for part-time jobs on and off campus, stating that priority will be given to disabled students for on-campus part-time jobs and 60% of their pay will be covered by the University if they find off-campus jobs.Hyo Jeong Kim (Department of Sociology), who participated in the meeting, said, "This year, I met with many people as a reporter for the University Newspaper and it was good that the professors, students, and staff members I met considered me 'a reporter,' rather than 'a disabled student,'" adding, "I want to ask people not to pay attention to my physical challenge but look at me for who I am."
