Interviews with Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim are published in The Financial News and The Joongboo Ilbo[16.07.11]An interview with Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim was published in The Financial News on July 11th. The full-page story on page 9 introduced President Kim's philosophy and principles in life and a series of programs that are being carried out by the University.During the interview, which was conducted on the afternoon of July 6th, President Kim said, "I chose to lead the University, because I thought that my service here would 'contribute to changing our society' through communicating with young people, listening to their concerns, and fostering excellent talents," adding, "I would like to educate Ajou's students to develop their abilities and other qualities."In addition, he explained the University's AFTER YOU Program and the Paran Semester – Creative Activity Program.On July 7th, The Joongboo Ilbo, a daily newspaper based in Gyeonggi Province, ran another interview with President Kim under the title "Game-changing Revolution – Young People Should Not Hesitate to Take on Challenges."

The Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province holds the 4th Gyeonggi Unification Forum [16.07.01] The Gyeonggi Unification Forum, which is co-hosted by Ajou University and the Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province, was held on the afternoon of June 30th at the University's Yulgok Hall The event was attended by about 60 students, professors, and staff members from the University, and members of the Unification Education Council for Southern Gyeonggi Province. The lecture, entitled "Lessons from the German Unification and Our Preparations for Unification," was given by CEO Chang Seok Yang of SunyangHana. CEO Yang has served as the spokesperson, Director of the Planning and Coordination Office, and Director of the Office of Inter-Korean Dialogue at the Ministry of Unification. CEO Yang explained differences and similarities between Germany and Korea, saying, "We should build up our economic capability to prepare for unification and steadily raise the necessary funds.” He went on to say, "We also need to strengthen our abilities for unification across all fields including politics, economy, and society, and make preparations in terms of legal and other infrastructure." The Gyeonggi Unification Forum features bi-monthly special lectures and is hosted by Ajou University after it was selected as the Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province by the Ministry of Unification. There are a total of 17 Unification Education Centers across the country, which are responsible for unification-related education as the educational hubs of their respective communities

Ajou signs an agreement on cooperation in academic research, etc., with the Korea Food Research Institute [16.06.30] On the morning of June 30th, Ajou University (President Dong Yeon Kim) signed an agreement on joint academic research and additional bilateral cooperation with the Korea Food Research Institute (KFRI, President Yong Kon Park) in the University's Yulgok Hall. During the signing ceremony, Ajou's President Kim and KFRI President Park signed and exchanged the agreement (pictured above). The two institutions will join forces in planning research programs and carrying out tasks involving industry, academia, and research institutes; operating research institute-academia courses at the Graduate School and assisting student exchange; exchanging research talents and information; and promoting research policy and culture that are science and technology-friendly. The ceremony was attended by Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Dean Hye Sun Kim of the College of Natural Sciences, and Dean Moon Sook Yoo of the College of Nursing from the University, and Director Myeong Ho Kim of the Division of Food Safety, Distribution, and Standard Research and Director Seong Il Lim of the Strategy and Planning Division from KFRI. President Park said, "KFRI will be able to make world-class achievements in the research and development projects that are being carried out if we work together with Ajou's excellent talents," adding, "I hope that this agreement will lead to an effective partnership that can benefit both of our institutions." President Kim said, "KFRI is known as the only government-invested research institute that specializes in foods. I believe that there are many areas of potential synergy if our two institutions join hands," adding, "We will be able to see substantial progress over time if we start from the areas in which it is easier to make a difference."

Invited renowned people give lectures for Ajou's “AFTER YOU Program” [16.06.28] For three days from June 22nd, renowned guest speakers gave lectures for Ajou University's students participating in the “AFTER YOU Program – 2016 Ajou Global Campus.” The lectures were arranged to motivate students. The event began on the afternoon of June 22nd with one entitled "Game-changing Revolution" by Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim, followed by lectures by Advisor Seung Gyu Min of Samsung Economic Research Institute, Former Prime Minister Hong Won Jung, and CEO Hyo Joon Kim of BMW Korea. The lectures were attended by students and staff members who are participating in the “AFTER YOU Program” this summer. Advisor Min passed on his advice and support to the students, encouraging them to live energetic lives. Former Premier Jung discussed his own career and experiences as a government official with the students, adding, "You should respect and have consideration for the people around you and stay humble at all times." CEO Kim explained how foreign companies view South Korean talents and the culture of global companies and the qualifications that they expect from applicants. In addition, foreign language classes were arranged for the program participants. Chinese and English classes were held from May 23rd and June 22nd for 20 hours each, respectively. A total of 121 students will be sent to the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins University, and Washington University in the U.S. and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Beijing Institute of Technology in China. Twenty students from Ajou's neighboring universities are among the participants in the Program. The “AFTER YOU Program" is an intensive overseas training program for students who find it hard to build overseas experience. Students will attend language courses and have cultural experiences, etc. and all of the expenses are covered by full scholarships. Suwon Drone Festival ends in success [16.06.27] The 2016 Suwon Drone Festival, which is co-hosted by Ajou University and the Suwon Municipal Government, was held on June 25th and 26th in the playground and the indoor gymnasium at the University. Suwon City said that about 35,000 people participated in the event. The second annual festival featured a variety of programs that helped citizens become familiar with drones. On the playground, there was a formation flight of drones, a flight of racing drones, and showcases of the utility of drones, including observation, target hitting, precision landing, and crop-dusting. In addition, a number of industrial, academic, research, and public institutions set up booths displaying various drones and related parts. Events that were held in the indoor gymnasium included a mini drone racing contest, a drone dancing show, a drone fighter class, a screening of award-winning works from a drone-related film festival, and a display of award-winning works from a drone-related idea contest. In particular, the Business Section was arranged to promote drone-related industries, attracting investments, and explaining new technologies. It was an opportunity for consulting, marketing, and overseas exports for domestic drone businesses, with members of the World OKTA participating. From the University, professors demonstrated various activities related to their research at the event, which was organized by the LINC Project Group, including the Ground Control Station for multiple unmanned drones (Professor Yong Jin Kwon, Department of Industrial Engineering), a tactical data link simulator for national defense and auto flight and photography by drones (Professor Ho Ki Baek, Department of Defense and Digital Convergence), displaying vertical takeoff and landing drones with fixed wings and their application algorithm (Professor Jai Hoon Kim, Department of Cyber Security), and building drones with 3D printers (Professor Jeong Han Ko, Department of Industrial Engineering). Also, there was a booth introducing the University's Paran Semester. The Research Society for Drone Industry Policy held a seminar on the development of drone industries under the title "The Present and Future of Drones." At the opening ceremony on June 25th, Suwon City Mayor Tae Young Yeom said, "Suwon City is looking to become a leader in the drone industry based on its excellent infrastructure," adding, "I am confident of that, because we have drone-related businesses and can access the outstanding talent pools from outstanding educational institutions in this city, including Ajou." President Dong Yeon Kim said, "The drone industry is already growing fast with related start-ups and becoming an important core industry for future growth," adding, "I hope that Ajou University will contribute to the development of drone industries by promoting creative and innovative ideas among students through the Paran Semester, and will partner with local governments and drone industries." Director of the LINC Project Group and Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi said, "The drone industry is continuing development for commercial, public, and private purposes and, in particular, the potential for commercial uses is tremendous since there are no limitations in scope and applications. From now on, the key to market success is who can utilize drones in what ways. If we can succeed, it will greatly help in job creation," adding, "In that sense, this event is quite significant because the local government, related industries, and the University have come together for the development of the drone industry."

Former Premier Hong Won Jung gives a special lecture to Ajou's “AFTER YOU” Program participants [16.06.24] Former Prime Minister Hong Won Jung gave a special lecture to the participants of Ajou University's “AFTER YOU” Program. The one-and-a-half-hour lecture, which was held on the afternoon of June 23rd in Room 105 in the College Academic Building, was attended by students and staff members who are participating in the “AFTER YOU” Program this summer. Former Premier Jung discussed his own career and experiences as a government official with the students and passed on encouraging messages and support for them. He said, "You can easily find mentors around you who will give you lessons," adding, "I recommend that you try to watch, listen to, and learn from them, and these experiences will be integrated into your own character, speech, and acts over time." He went on to say, "I hope that you respect and have consideration for the people around you and stay humble at all times." Former Premier Jung passed the Korean Bar Exam in 1972 and worked as Director of the Gwangju Regional Prosecutors' Office and Director of the Busan Regional Prosecutors' Office. He then served as the 42nd Prime Minister for two years from February 2013 and worked together with Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim, who served as Minister for Government Policy Coordination at the time. Former Premier Jung attended President Kim's inaugural ceremony in February last year, marking the first time an incumbent Prime Minister participated in the inauguration of a president of a private university since the South Korean government was established. A total of 121 students from Ajou and neighboring universities will participate in the “AFTER YOU” Program this summer. They will attend language courses and have cultural experiences, etc., over four weeks at the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins University, and Washington University in the U.S., and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Beijing Institute of Technology in China. Before the Program begins, lectures by invited renowned people and English and Chinese language classes were arranged for the participants.

Ajou signs an agreement on nurturing talents with Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit [16.06.23] On the morning of June 22nd, Ajou University and Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit (SMRT) entered into an agreement on fostering professional talents in the railway sector and industry-academia cooperation at the University's Yulgok Hall. The agreement signing ceremony was attended by President Dong Yeon Kim and Dean Choul Ki Lee of the Graduate School of Intelligent Transport Systems from the University and CEO Tae Ho Kim, Director Byeong Seon Kim of the Training Institute,and other officials from SMRT. The event began with PR videos of the two institutions, followed by greetings from CEO Kim and President Kim, and the signing of the agreement. In his greetings, CEO Kim said, "SMRT is the tenth-largest transit operator in the world and has a combined 125 kilometers of railways and 6,500 employees. We make continuous efforts to improve the quality of our services through nurturing our human resources. I expect that this agreement will be of great help in that regard." President Kim said, "I know that SMRT is striving to harmonize public services and profitability. Ajou will provide full support to help SMRT foster excellent talents, not only through the Graduate School of Intelligent Transport Systems, but University-wide."

Ajou signs an agreement with the Korea Testing Laboratory [16.06.22] Ajou University signed an agreement on improving industrial technological expertise and innovative capabilities with the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL). Under the agreement, the two institutions will work together for software testing certification and related R&D activities. During the agreement signing ceremony, which was held on the afternoon of June 22nd in the University's Yulgok Hall, Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim and Director Won Bok Lee of KTL signed and exchanged the agreement. The event was also attended by Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Vice President for Planning Jung Seob Lee, Dean Jung Yol Jo of the College of Information Technology, Dean Hye Sun Kim of the College of Natural Sciences, and Project Support Team Leader Cheol Kyun Park from the University. Ajou and KTL agreed to join forces for testing certification for improving the quality of software products; conducting research and development for establishing a software certification system including software validation; sharing equipment and facilities; exchanging R&D staff; and organizing related international conferences, seminars, and other academic events, etc. At the ceremony, President Kim said, "I expect that this agreement will bring together our two institutions for a substantial and close partnership." KTL was established to help enhance South Korea's industrial competitiveness through technological support for product testing and evaluation, and it is responsible for the certification of product performance and reliability and research and market analysis regarding product testing, evaluation, and certification.

ROK Air Force Chief of Staff meets with students from Ajou's Department of Defense and Digital Convergence [16.06.14] Republic of Korea (ROK) Air Force Chief of Staff Kyeong Doo Jeong visited Ajou University to encourage students in the Department of Defense and Digital Convergence. The Department was launched last year under the related agreement between the University and the ROK Air Force. Upon arriving at the University on the morning of June 14th, Chief of Staff Jeong and other officials met with Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim in the President's Office. Also in attendance at the meeting were Director Gwang Soo Lee of the Division of Information and Planning, Chief Secretary Ok Cheol Shin, and Head of the Education Policies Section Jeong Hyeon Choi, Head of Command and Management Section Yeong Chae Kim, and Head of Protocol Section Yong Gu Hwang from the Air Force. Executive Vice President Kyung Hee Choi, Dean Jung Yol Jo of the College of Information Technology, Professor Tae Yeong Kim (former Defense Minister), and Director Jae Sung Lim of the Department of Defense and Digital Convergence joined them from the University. The meeting was followed by a presentation on the operation of the Department of Defense and Digital Convergence by Director Lim. Students who enter the Department receive a full scholarship from the ROK Air Force for the four years they attend the University. In exchange for the scholarship, after graduation the graduates are required to serve as officers in the ROK Air Force for seven years. After that period, they are able to choose between remaining in the military, moving to defense businesses or defense related research institutes, etc. Chief of Staff Jeong then met thirty-nine students – freshmen and sophomores – from the Department and discussed life in and the future of the ROK Air Force. At the end of the event, he shook hands with each and every student and distributed books as gifts. Chief of Staff Jeong said, "I trust the expertise and experience of Ajou's faculty members," adding, "I expect that the students at the Department of Defense and Digital Convergence continuously develop their talents and join the Air Force after graduation."
